Burton Rd. junction on southbound U.S. 20 to close permanently

  Published at

The following is a news release from the Idaho Transportation Department.

RIGBY — The 3800 South (Burton Road) junction with southbound U.S. 20 will close permanently Monday. The junction, just north of Lone Pine Nursery & Landscaping on the west side of U.S. 20, will close to improve traffic safety.

This and other closures between Lorenzo and Rexburg are in connection with construction of the Thornton Interchange, which will be completed in late October or early November.

The new interchange will improve safety and operational effectiveness by eliminating the final at-grade (level) intersections with U.S. 20 in the 34-mile stretch between Idaho Falls and Sugar City. This has helped reduce serious-injury crashes despite increased traffic levels and higher speed limits.

Workers permanently closed 4985 South (Thornton intersection) on each side of U.S. 20 and the River Bridge Road (Archer exit) just north of the Snake River this spring.

4300 West (Bear World Drive) will permanently close later this fall.

The new Thornton Interchange (Exit 328) also will connect Madison County’s planned 5000 South project, which is designed to improve traffic flow in the southern part of the county.

Total cost of the new interchange, including land acquisition, design, construction and landscaping, will be nearly $20 million. The interchange includes north and south entrances and exits to improve entrance onto and exit from both U.S. 20 and 4700 South.

Landscaping for the new interchange will be finished in the spring.
