Rexburg drive thru event promotes breast cancer screenings

REXBURG– A massive line of cars was waiting outside of Teton Radiology Madison Wednesday morning to take part in a drive thru breast cancer awareness event.

“It’s an opportunity to build awareness for breast cancer screenings,” Teton Radiology Madison spokesman Derek Van Orden said.

Wednesday marked the tenth annual Brake for Breakfast event. Organizers said it’s meant to highlight an important cause as Idaho ranked second to lowest in mammogram rates nationwide for women over 40 in 2012, according to the Comprehensive Cancer Alliance for Idaho.

“Frankly we struggle in the state of Idaho for breast cancers screenings. We’re just trying to get the word out,” Van Orden said.

Cars began lining the Teton Radiology Madison parking lot on E. 4th N. around 6:45 a.m. Drivers pulled up to tables and received bags containing breakfast, pens, informational slips and cups.

Representatives from Madison Memorial Hospital, Teton Radiology Madison, Grand Peaks Medical and Dental and a Brigham Young University-Idaho advocacy group were also on hand distributing the gifts and providing a rose to cancer survivors.
