REXBURG — If you aren’t satisfied with watching the zombie apocalypse on a screen then save your energy for this weekend when you can live it.

The Dealio and Hemming Village are hosting the third annual Zombie Chase Race in Rexburg. With Halloween around the corner this 5K obstacle course looks to be a perfect workout before indulging on scary treats.

“The rules are simple, survive the race with at least one flag left,” The Dealio spokesperson, Matt Urick said.

Runners can choose to be a survivor, a zombie, or a zombie runner. Urick said runners have the option of running with a set of flag football flags.

Zombies are spread throughout the course in “infected zones.” They can grab flags from survivors as they pass into these zones. Zombie runners can run with survivors and can take flags only in infected areas.

“There is no way to gain immunity, but there will be a couple of “flag reload stations” staggered throughout the course to allow the survivors to restock on flags,” Urick said.

“The goal of the zombies is to make the race challenging and fun for the survivors,” Urick said.

If participants don’t want the pressure of escaping the zombie attacks there is an option to run without flags and just enjoy the obstacle course.

“We don’t want the race to get too competitive where one party isn’t able to enjoy it. As a family event, we always ask that the zombies use their best judgment when attempting to pull flags,” Urick said.

Urick said the last two years of the race have been a hit with some 800 participants running in 2015’s chase.

“The past two years have been incredible! This event wouldn’t be possible without the help and support of the community members and especially all the local businesses that help sponsor the event,” Urick said.

All of the proceeds from the event go to Madison Junior High School’s Parent Teacher Organization.

The race for survival, or brains will be Saturday, Oct. 15th. Go to the Zombie Chase Race website to find out how you can sign up. Find more information on Facebook and Instagram.
