POCATELLO — After crashing through the metal gates at the entrance to the Oregon Trail Shooting Range in northern Bannock County, Lyle Bugbee, 72, died Friday afternoon, county officials said.

Bugbee was unconscious and not breathing when Bannock County sheriff’s deputies, state troopers and Pocatello Fire Department paramedics arrived at the scene of the noon Friday accident.

“What we’re thinking is that he probably had a heart attack,” said Kim Quick, coroner for Bannock County. “They worked him all the way to the hospital but there was no change in his heart rhythm.”

Paramedics attempted to revive the man using CPR and then transported him via ambulance to Portneuf Medical Center in Pocatello. He was pronounced dead at PMC.

The shooting range is located off 2 1/2 Mile Road northeast of Chubbuck.

Bugbee’s Honda Accord came to a stop in a nearby field after crashing through the gates.

No further information was available this weekend, but the incident remains under investigation by state police.

“It was pretty straightforward and it looked like he had a medical problem before he crashed,” Quick said. “It was pretty benign.”
