DAILY FORECAST: Rising temperatures, rain and a flood watch

  Published at

IDAHO FALLS — The majority of eastern Idaho remains under a flood watch for Thursday, March 9 due to rising temperatures and the risk of excessive snow melt.

Starting Friday, temperatures are expected to rise into the mid 40s to near 50 in many areas where significant snow is still on the ground. Rapid snow melt is possible, which could create low land flooding, water over roads and flooding near homes.

The following cities are under the flood watch: Burley, Rupert, Heyburn, St. Anthony, Ashton, Island Park, Driggs, Victor, Idaho Falls, Rexburg, Malad City, Oakley, Rockland, Henry, Soda Springs, Downey, Lava Hot Springs, Preston, Montpelier, Hailey, Ketchum, Bellevue, Arco, Challis, and Mackay.

A winter storm advisory also is still in effect for the following counties: Lemhi, Clark, Fremont, Teton and eastern Madison, according to the National Weather Service.

The advisory will be active until Friday afternoon with heavy and blowing snow predicted throughout the region. Between 4 to 12 inches of snow has been predicted to fall between Tuesday and Friday in areas above 6,000 feet. Between 1 to 3 inches of snow is predicted in the valleys.

A winter storm warning has been issued for western Wyoming where some 10 to 26 inches of snow are expected to fall at higher elevations and 5 to 10 inches at lower elevations. Strong winds will also produce blowing and drifting snow.

No road closures are being reported as of 8 a.m. Thursday.

The Idaho Transportation Department reports icy patches on Idaho Highway 34 between Soda Springs and the Wyoming State Line and on Idaho Highway 47 between Ashton and Warm River.
