High speed chase ends in hospitalization and jail

DRUMMOND — A local man was briefly hospitalized following a high speed chase on U.S. Highway 20 on Friday night.

Madison County deputies attempted to pull over Jean Wirtz of Madison County around 7 p.m. for driving on a suspended license. He had been arrested last week for the same crime.

“When deputies saw him in a vehicle they knew he was driving on a suspended license,” Madison County Sheriff Chief Deputy Bart Quayle told EastIdahoNews.com. “That’s when he chose to flee.”

Wirtz fled on U.S. Highway 20 from Rexburg into Fremont County. Madison and Fremont County deputies chased him through Ashton and into rural Fremont County.

Wirtz rolled his vehicle east of Drummond. He suffered minor injuries and was transported to Madison Memorial Hospital.

He was later released and arrested for felony eluding police, and misdemeanor driving without privileges. He was booked into the Madison County Jail and will appear in court next week.
