DAILY FORECAST: High wind advisory issued

  Published at

IDAHO FALLS — A high wind advisory has been issued for most of the Snake River Plain for Thursday, April 13.

The areas surrounding Rexburg, Idaho Falls and Pocatello will see southwest winds of 25 to 35 mph during the late afternoon and evening with gusting winds above 50 mph.

The wind will be strong enough to lift dust from agricultural fields and reduce visibility — particularly along Interstate 15, Interstate 86 and U.S. Highway 20. This will make driving hazardous, especially at the speed limit and for high profile vehicles, according to the National Weather Service. Drivers need to slow down in a high wind situations and anticipate sudden changes of visibility to near zero.

The only other severe weather alert is a continued flood warning on the Portneuf River in Pocatello. The river is measuring above flood stage at 9.9 feet. Minor flooding is occurring along its banks. The river is expected to rise to 10.1 feet by Friday causing moderate flooding of agricultural land near the river.

Additionally, a flood advisory is still in effect for the Bear River in Bear Lake County. The river remains elevated and is slightly above its banks from Montpelier to the Wyoming State Line. Some minor field and dirt road flooding is occurring near Pegram and Dingle.

ROAD REPORT

No road closures have been reported as of 8 a.m. Thursday.

Idaho Highway 31 between Swan Valley and Victor will be closed starting Monday, April 17, through Tuesday, April 18, for bridge construction. The Idaho Transportation Department recommends travelers going to Driggs or Victor use Idaho Highway 33 or U.S. Highway 26 to reach their destination.

Construction on northbound Interstate 15 between exit 72 (Chubbuck) and exit 80 (Fort Hall) has been reduced to one lane due to bridge maintenance. Expect delays and reduced speed of 65 mph through May 12.
