DAILY FORECAST: High winds, snow, rain and a road closure

IDAHO FALLS — It’s going to be another stormy day in eastern Idaho for Thursday, April 27.

A special weather advisory has been issued for most of eastern Idaho. Another 2 to 4 inches of snow will fall east of Interstate 15 today. Some of it will melt, but then freeze again during the night. An additional 2 to 4 inches are expected during the night. U.S. Highway 20, Idaho Highway 33, U.S. Highway 26, Idaho Highway 30 and Interstate 89 will experience winter driving conditions.

A high wind advisory also has been issued for southeastern Idaho including the following communities: Burley, Rupert, Heyburn, Pocatello, Blackfoot, Malad City, Oakley, and Rockland. West winds of 30 to 40 mph are expected with gusts of 50 mph. The winds will create dangerous road conditions for high profile vehicles, particularly on Interstate 84 and Interstate 86.

All of western Wyoming is under a winter weather advisory. Between 6 and 12 inches of snow is expected throughout the region.

The rain is causing the Portneuf River to rise again. The river, which is more than a foot above flood stage, is measuring at 9.7 feet. Minor flooding is occurring along its banks. The river is expected to rise above 9.9 feet by Friday morning causing moderate flooding in the surrounding area.

A flood advisory is still in effect for the Bear River in Bear Lake County. The river, and surrounding streams remain elevated and are slightly above their banks from Montpelier to the Wyoming State Line. Some minor field and dirt road flooding is occurring near Pegram and Dingle.

ROAD REPORT

A 10-mile portion of Idaho Highway 39 is closed between Sterline West Road and Chandler Road for repairs to three canal bridges. A detour is in operation. The closure is in effect from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays and Saturdays until May 5. The Idaho Transportation Department urges drivers to use caution in work areas.

Difficult road conditions are also being reported on the following roads due to snow and slush on the roadway:

  • Interstate 15 between Dubois and Lima, Montana
  • Idaho Highway 28 between Hahn and the Montana State Line
  • U.S. Highway 20 between St. Anthony and the Wyoming State Line
  • Idaho Highway 32 between Ashton and Tetonia
  • Idaho Highway 33 between Driggs and the Wyoming State Line
  • Idaho Highway 31 between Swan Valley and Wyoming State Line
  • U.S. Highway 89 between Montpelier and the Wyoming State Line
  • Idaho Highway 36 between Liberty and Ovid

Construction on northbound Interstate 15 between exit 72 (Chubbuck) and exit 80 (Fort Hall) has been reduced to one lane due to bridge maintenance. Expect delays and reduced speed of 65 mph through May 12.

Idaho Falls, Rigby and Rexburg

The Upper Snake River Plain will see scattered rain and snow showers in the morning and numerous showers in the afternoon. Up to 2 inches of snow is possible, which will be accompanied by southwest winds of 15 to 25 mph. At night it will be cloudy with a 50 percent chance of rain and snow. Another 2 inches of snow is possible with lows of 25 to 32 degrees and decreasing wind speeds.

Pocatello, Fort Hall and Blackfoot

It’s going to be partly sunny with scattered rain and snow showers through the day. Up to 2 inches of snow could fall, which will be accompanied by high winds. Southwest winds of 25 to 35 mph are expected with highs of 37 to 47 degrees. There will be numerous rain and snow showers during the night with an additional 2 inches of snow possible. Winds speeds will decrease to between 10 to 15 mph with lows of 26 to 33 degrees.

St. Anthony, Ashton, Island Park, Driggs and Victor

The Upper Snake Highlands will be cloudy with scattered snow showers throughout the day. Between 2 and 4 inches of snow could fall with highs of 37 to 44 degrees. It’ll be cloudy at night with scattered snow and rain showers and an additional 2 inches of snow are possible. Lows of 20 to 28 degrees are expected.

Arco, Challis and Mackay

There will be scattered snow showers in the morning, and lots of snow in the afternoon. Up to 2 inches could fall during the day with highs of 36 to 46 degrees. It’ll be cloudy at night with scattered snow showers and lows of 23 to 30 degrees.

Henry, Soda Springs, Downey and Lava Hot Springs

The Caribou Highlands will see widespread snow showers throughout the day with breezy conditions. Between 2 and 4 inches of snow are possible with highs of 35 to 43 degrees. There will be scattered snow and rain showers during the night with an additional 3 inches of snow possible. Lows of 24 to 31 degrees are expected.
