Idaho Falls Zoo welcomes new deliveries in time for 2017 season opening

IDAHO FALLS — Guests to the Idaho Falls Zoo will see new animals this season.

When the Idaho Falls Zoo opens its gates Saturday at 9 a.m., it will feature new residents: a male sloth bear cub, four new wallaby joeys and a Bactrian camel calf.

The camel calf, a male, was born on March 6. Zoo officials say the calf is with his parents in the camel exhibit and is doing well. His mother, Zazu, is especially proud of him, they said.

The Asian sloth bear exhibit will feature an energetic 5-month-old cub. Look out for the cub’s playful antics — zoo officials say the male cub loves to ride on his mother’s back, an action they describe as an “endearing trait unique to sloth bears.”

“Guests will have a great time watching his playful antics as his mother, Priya, patiently educates him in the ways of being a sloth bear,” says Curator of Education Sunny Katseanes.

Also new to the zoo this year are brightly colored animal information signs designed for each species in the zoo. The signs feature a fresh, easy-to-read format that includes fun facts and the international conservation status of the animal species, according to a news release.
