Local ballet dancers, orchestra hosting free concert in Rexburg
Published at | Updated atREXBURG — Music and dancing will take the stage at the Rexburg Tabernacle this Tuesday and Wednesday.
The Rexburg Tabernacle Orchestra and local ballet dancers are coming together to host the Rexburg Tabernacle Orchestra Spring Concert.
The ballet troupe is made up of some 20 performers.
Dancers are from the Brigham Young University-Idaho dance department, along with advanced students from local ballet studios. Kristina Wight stands in as the choreographer and Mackenzie Herwerdine is the technical director, according to a news release.
The community orchestra is made of volunteers who are professional musicians, music educators, private teachers and advanced public school and university students.
This spring concert will conclude the 14th season of the tabernacle orchestra performing at three free concerts per year.
Orchestra conductor Kevin Call has been rehearsing with musicians and dancers since the beginning of the year. The group will perform Igor Stravinsky’s “Petrushka.”
“Our goal is to present this musical glimpse of 19th century Russian folklore, complete with fairground puppets that come to life, in such away that the Rexburg reception will be as enthusiastic as was the premiere in Paris more than 100 years ago”, Call said in the release.
Orchestra manager Gwyn Harris said the second half of the concert will be just as entertaining as the first.
It will included musical spoofs of famous composers such as The 1712 Overture by fictitious composer P.D.Q. Bach, featuring BYU-Idaho professor Daniel Kerr in costume at the organ, as well as City Councilman Christopher Mann narrating “The End of the Symphony.”
“You must come to hear how the cannons from the famous ‘1812 Overture’ will be handled in this musical comedy version of the ‘1712 Overture,'” says Harris.
The event is free and open to the public. It starts 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.
