IDAHO FALLS — More than 100 riders turned out for the annual Mayors’ Family Bike Ride Monday in an effort to promote safer paths for area bicyclists.

“This is the largest turnout ever,” Idaho Falls Mayor Rebecca Casper announced during the event. “It’s a great day to be out. I’m so pleased to see so many families and so many helmets.”

Casper went on to say events like the Mayors’ Family Bike Ride help push the message to local policy makers that Idaho Falls needs safer trails and paths for riders. “These rides help promote health within our community and maybe one will help with our transportation goals,” she said.

Though Casper was not available to ride this year, Ammon Mayor Dana Kirkham rode with the dozens of riders, ushering the way into the City of Ammon’s McCowin Park.

The Idaho Falls Police Department block roads along the route into Ammon to ensure everyone got there safe.

While at McCowin Park, Kirkham invited families to venture into Ammon and enjoy the parks they have to offer.

“We have our Splash Pad here, it will be open every day 8:30 to 9:30 starting June 2,” Kirkham said.

The Ammon Mayor boasted about their outdoor swim pool. “In 1967 we purchased this pool for $27,000, now we make a profit of about $150,000 a year, that’s an investment we are very proud of,” she said.

After the ride, cyclists rode back to Idaho Fall’s Community Park where hamburgers, chips, and water were served to riders by Billman’s and Wackerli Subaru.

Wackerli also raffled off prizes for participants: water bottles, headphones and a Subaru bike was awarded.
