BLACKFOOT — A high speed pursuit ended in a Blackfoot neighborhood Monday afternoon and two people are now in police custody.

The pursuit began when deputies received a report of merchandise stolen from Walmart in Blackfoot, according to Bingham County Sheriff Chief Deputy Jeff Gardner. Bingham County Sheriff Craig Rowland says a vehicle was not stolen, contrary to other media reports.

Gardner says the suspect’s vehicle was spotted a short time later going northbound on I-15. Deputies tried to stop the car but the driver refused to pull over.

Police followed the driver, who also had a passenger with him, and at times he drove over 100 mph, according to Gardner. The suspect exited I-15 and drove on US 91 between Shelley and Blackfoot and deputies used spike strips multiple times in an attempt to get the driver to stop.

The pursuit eventually ended on Rodgers Ave. in Blackfoot nearly 25 minutes after it started. Both occupants of the car ran for about a block before being apprehended, Gardner says.
