Authorities respond to ointment spill in Teton Valley

DRIGGS — A reckless motorist caused a driver transporting barrels of pain-relieving ointment to swerve off Highway 31 and spill some of his cargo on Wednesday.

Josh Hansen said he was driving toward Victor up Pine Creek Pass pulling a trailer of Amish Origins Ointment on his way to a plant in Worland, Wyoming when another driver tried to pass him on a curving section of road. That driver swerved to avoid an oncoming car, which caused Hansen to pull off onto the shoulder.

That sudden move caused his trailer to jump and turn over, throwing the barrels.

One landed in the road where Hansen said another driver hit it, got out to make sure their vehicle was undamaged, then drove off.

“He looked at the front of his vehicle and took off,” he said.

Bonneville County Sheriff’s Deputies, Teton County Fire Units and Idaho State Police were among those on the scene.

A deputy with Bonneville County said ISP was in touch with the Forest Service and other federal agencies to determine the best cleanup method.

Hansen stressed that the spilled ointment was contained and that the product is made of natural essential oils including pine, camphor, wintergreen, and eucalyptus oils.
