Fireworks truck goes up in flames at Independence Day celebration

LEADORE — Spectators got an unusually large grand finale during a city firework celebration Tuesday night.

Residents were celebrating Independence Day at the Leadore County Airport around 10 p.m.

Near the end of the show, something happened that caused the cab of the truck to ignite, engulfing the entire vehicle and setting off the remaining fireworks in the bed of the truck, according to Leadore Volunteer Fire Department Chief Sam Peterson.

“That truck went up and was engulfed in flames, but we got it out pretty quickly,” Peterson said.

He said either a firework accidentally shot into the cab of the truck and started the fire, or an ember drifted into the cab and ignited the blaze. Peterson is still investigating the cause.

The fire was about 100 yards from speculators, and no one was hurt.

The truck was a complete loss. The only other damage was to the nearby grass, which also briefly ignited.
