REXBURG — A Rexburg man partially destroyed the wrong car with a golf club during a fit of road rage Monday, say police.

Stephen Timothy Carlson was arrested for felony malicious injury to property and misdemeanor disturbing the peace and booked into the Madison County Jail.

Police reports show earlier in the day Carlson had got into a heated argument with the driver of a moped over a perceived traffic violation near the Brigham Young University-Idaho campus.

Later that day, Carlson tracked down the driver of the moped at Porter Park.

Capt. Randy Lewis said they proceeded to argue again and Carlson threatened the man.

Then in a fit of rage — Carlson took a No. 5 iron golf club and began beating the rear of a 2002 Honda Accord, Lewis said. Carlson told police he drives a virtually identical vehicle, and believed the Honda Accord was his vehicle.

Police said it is unknown why he wanted to damage his own car, or how he mistook another car for his own.

Authorities said multiple people in Porter Park called police to report the act of vandalism.

Lewis said the car sustained more than $1,000 in damages.
