MENAN — The Menan Butte fire grew from 30 acres to more than 212 acres Sunday night.

The fire, which appears to have been caused by fireworks, initially started and was extinguished on Saturday. However, storms on Sunday afternoon brought erratic winds that rekindled hot spots in the interior of the fire, according to a Bureau of Land Management news release.

Three single engine air tankers and one heavy air tanker dropped retardant Sunday evening until dark on the advancing portion of the fire. A pair of dozers secured the fire perimeter. Thirteen fire engines from multiple federal and local agencies worked on the blaze over the weekend.
