Blackfoot man found dead in Mackay area

The following is a news release from Custer County Search and Rescue on Monday.

On Sunday the Custer County Sheriff’s Office received a call from camper Russell Vickers. He was camping in the Alder Creek Drainage approximately 5 miles south southwest of Mackay. He reported that his friend, 56-year-old Kerry Poole of Blackfoot, was long overdue returning to camp from a four-wheeler ride.

Poole had a history of heart-related illness and he was insulin dependent. He had only light clothing and had left his insulin in the truck at camp.

Custer County Sheriff Stuart Lumpkin activated the Custer County Search and Rescue, Challis and South Custer units, to begin a hasty search of the area for Poole. Civil Air Patrol was contacted and supplied a plane to fly search patterns over the incident area.

By nightfall Sunday, search units reported no sign of Poole.

On Monday, ATV search and rescue teams were requested from Bonneville County and Butte County. An A-Star helicopter from Reeder Flying Service out of Twin Falls was chartered to fly search patterns.

At 11 a.m. the body of Kerry Poole was located in Saw Mill Canyon approximately 1.5 miles from his camp. No official cause of death is being released at this time, but the Custer County Sheriff will confirm that no foul play contributed to Poole’s death.

Custer County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank all those involved in this operation.
