Utah teacher reinstated after controversial survey

  Published at

ROY — A Roy High School teacher placed on administrative leave after handing students a questionnaire that asked them about sexual activities and delinquent behavior, has been reinstated, the Weber School District confirmed Friday morning.

Candace Thurgood handed the survey out to 11th-grade students at Roy High School last week, according to KSL.com. The class provided instruction in human sexuality.

District officials say they will talk with Thurgood Friday morning. They don’t believe there was ill intent with the survey, but it will never be used again, a district spokesman said.

Former students had planned a rally to support Thurgood Friday morning.

By 7:30 a.m., about 10 people carrying signs of support stood in the rain outside the school. They said they were thrilled that Thurgood has been reinstated and could return to the classroom Friday.

The questionnaire was posted to several websites, including scarymommy.com. The 30-question survey asked students questions from drug use to sexual activity and abortion and originated from a 1967 Ann Landers survey about sex and drugs.
