Girl Scouts Council CEO says organization has no immediate plans to admit boys

IDAHO FALLS — The Girl Scouts of America will continue to focus on serving girls and has no plans to admit boys in the near future, according to Girl Scouts of Silver Sage CEO Pat Pyke.

The Silver Sage Council serves around 5,000 girls and utilizes some 2,300 volunteers in eastern Oregon, southern Idaho and parts of Northern Nevada.

Pyke spoke with EastIdahoNews.com reporter Nate Eaton Thursday during a taping of East Idaho Newsmakers. She was asked about the announcement Wednesday that the Boy Scouts of America will begin admitting girls to some programs and allow them to obtain the rank of Eagle Scout.

“I was a little bit surprised. I have talked to my Boy Scout counterparts so we knew they were considering this at their national conference but we didn’t know what the outcome be,” Pyke said.

Pyke recently returned from the Girl Scouts national convention, which is held every three years, and said the issue of admitting boys into the program was not discussed.

“Changing even a small item in the constitution would take a lot of study and debate. It takes a multi-year exploration process and I haven’t heard anything to that effect,” said Pyke.

Pyne said leaders are unclear how the Boy Scout announcement will impact Girl Scout enrollment but said the organization will continue to focus on their core mission of helping girls succeed.

“We don’t know what to predict,” Pyke said. “We have girls that are very focused on their girl scout journey and we are about helping each girl discover her potential.”
