Man gets 45 days in jail for vehicular manslaughter
BLACKFOOT – Dirk G. Johnson, 59, of Idaho Falls, will spend 45 days in the Bingham County Jail for vehicular manslaughter.
On Thursday, Johnson was sentenced to 365 days in jail, with 317 days of that sentence suspended and held at the courts discretion. He was also given a one day credit for time served.
Johnson was sentenced following an incident on June 28. He was driving an empty gravel truck in an construction zone south of Idaho Falls when traffic began to slow. Idaho State Police said Johnson was unable to slow down and veered into oncoming traffic, colliding into a Dodge 2500 pickup truck pulling a horse trailer.
Shirley Williams, 65, of Idaho Falls, was traveling southbound in the Dodge. She was rushed by ambulance to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, where she died.
Her horse was thrown from the trailer and killed immediately.
Johnson was also given two years of probation, which was suspended, and ordered to pay a $1,000 fine and restitution. A hearing to determine restitution will be held Feb. 8 in Blackfoot.
