Playmill Theatre to hold auditions sooner than usual

WEST YELLOWSTONE– The owners of the Playmill Theatre are bringing a special production to West Yellowstone this summer and they’re sending the call out for auditions earlier than usual.

With permission from Disney, the Playmill will be showing Disney’s “Newsies the Broadway Musical”. The theatre is the first in the area, and several western states to get the show, and they want to do it justice with the right cast. Owners said the show is typically seen on the Broadway stage or Broadway tours.

Theatre co-owner Heidi Merril said they’re looking to cast roughly 12 men and boys to fill the parts and 20 cast members total. Merrill said they are looking for men who are able to move on stage, dance well on stage and take direction. Dance experience is not required but will be given special consideration. Boys must be between the ages of 8 to 14 and men 18 years and older.

In addition to Newsies, the Playmill will be featuring Disney’s “The Little Mermaid”, and Irving Berlin’s “Annie Get Your Gun”. Cast members who are chosen will fulfill the diverse roles of all three shows.

Some 35,000 visitors attend the theatre in West Yellowstone, Montana each summer to see musicals and plays in an intimate setting. Owners say the audience can feel like they’re a part of the show as they surround the thrust stage on three sides.

Owners Heidi and Roger Merrill have owned and operated the theatre since 2004 and the Playmill has been running since June 1964. The Playmill, a summer stock theatre, and prides itself in putting on a high-quality, family-friendly productions during the warm months of the year.

Auditions will be held in Rexburg on January 27, 2018, at the Madison Public Library Community Room at 73 N. Center Street. It will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Auditions will also be held in Provo February 3, 2018, at Brigham Youn University in the Richards Building Room 1137 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Callbacks will be held the same day of the auditions by invitation only from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. The process of choosing the cast will follow the callbacks.

Those who cannot attend a live audition are invited to submit a video audition. Go to the Playmill’s website for more information on auditions and tickets.

The theatre is also hiring box office staff and lighting technicians.

The shows will begin Memorial Day weekend and go until Labor Day weekend. Performers must be available from the end of April through the beginning of September. All parts are a paid position.
