More signs added to roundabout to keep drivers from running into it

BONNEVILLE COUNTY — Drivers in eastern Idaho are having more difficulty than usual navigating a roundabout, or as some would call it, a rotary.

Typically, when a car pulls up to a roundabout, the driver should yield. When used properly, roundabouts can improve safety and reduce congestion in high traffic areas.

While driving through roundabouts in Bonneville County, many have noticed people fail to yield. This is such a common occurrence at one roundabout, the county has decided to add additional yield signs near the existing ones on the outside of the lanes.

Lance Bates, Bonneville County assistant public works director, said non-regulatory signs were added to increase visibility at the traffic circle on Hitt Rd and Iona Rd. Bates says there has been an issue with drivers crashing into the roundabout and damaging the structure.

“This is to enhance visibility where we’ve been having people run into it,” Bates said.

Along with new yield signs, black and white chevron signs have replaced black and yellow signs on the roundabout.

“They’ve got a higher reflectivity rating on it,” Bates said.

Bates said the roundabout on Lincoln road has not had as many problems with drivers failing to yield, but they are seeing if the new one will improve driver safety.

“We did not put all the new chevrons up at Lincoln yet, we’re seeing how it’s working at Iona. We have done the same thing at 25th and Lincoln,” Bates said. “We have had much less people running into the one at Lincoln.”
