WEATHER & ROADS: Wind advisory issued in eastern Idaho

IDAHO FALLS — A winter storm warning has been cancelled in eastern Idaho, although winter weather advisories remain in effect.

The National Weather Service says a winter weather advisory will remain active above 6,000 feet until about 3 p.m. Friday in the following counties: Clark, Fremont, Teton, Madison, Bannock, Bonneville, Bingham, Franklin, Oneida and Caribou. About 4 inches of snow is predicted in those areas.

A winter storm warning remains in effect in western Wyoming, especially in the mountain passes.

Additionally, a wind advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday for the following communities: Idaho Falls, Rigby, Rexburg, Burley, Rupert, Heyburn, Shoshone, American Falls, Aberdeen, Pocatello, Chubbuck, Fort Hall, Blackfoot, Idaho Falls and Idaho National Lab.

West winds of 30 mph are expected with gusts of up to 45 mph. High profile vehicles and trailers will encounter difficulties on north-south roads.

Friday’s Forecast:

Idaho Falls, Rigby and Rexburg

There will be scattered snow showers throughout the day with expected accumulations of up to 3 inches. Highs of 35 to 42 degrees are expected. Southwest winds of 10 to 20 mph are expected in the morning, and will increase to between 20 to 30 mph in the afternoon. It’ll be clear at night with lows of 15 to 25 degrees and southwest winds of 10 to 15 mph.

Pocatello, Blackfoot and Chubbuck

It’ll be cloudy today with scattered rain and show showers throughout the day. Up to 3 inches of snow is possible with highs of 35 to 42 degrees. Southwest winds of 15 to 25 mph during the morning will increase to between 25 to 35 mph in the afternoon. It’ll be mostly clear at night with lows of 18 to 28 degrees and west winds of 15 to 25 mph. Winds will decrease after midnight.

St. Anthony, Ashton, Island Park, Driggs, Victor and Dubois

There will be numerous snow showers throughout the day with up to 4 inches of snow possible. Highs of 32 to 39 degrees are expected. It’ll be partly cloudy at night with isolated snow showers in the evening and lows of 12 to 20 degrees.

Arco, Challis, and Mackay

It’ll be partly sunny with scattered snow showers today and highs of 30 to 40 degrees. It’ll be partly cloudy at night with lows of 11 to 19 degrees.

Henry, Soda Springs, Downey, and Lava Hot Springs

There will be numerous snow showers today with up to 4 inches of snow possible. Highs of 33 to 40 degrees are expected. West winds of 30 mph are expected in the afternoon. It’ll be cloudy during the day with isolated snow showers and lows of 14 to 24 degrees.

Road Report:

Difficult conditions are being reported on the following highways due to snow or slush on the roadway:

  • Idaho Highway 34 between Grace and Preston
  • Idaho Highway 34 between Soda Springs and the Wyoming border
  • Idaho Highway 36 between Mink and Ovid
  • Idaho Highway 29 between Leadore and the Montana border
  • U.S. Highway 93 between Salmon and the Montana border

Many eastern Idaho highways are also listed as wet and slippery.
