WEATHER & ROADS: Winter storm warning in effect for tonight

  Published at  | Updated at

IDAHO FALLS — Much of east Idaho will be hit by a snowstorm Wednesday night.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the following counties: Clark, Teton, Fremont and western Madison. Heavy snowfall of about 7 to 13 inches is expected in higher elevation areas, with some localized areas receiving up to 18 inches. Officials advise drivers to be prepared for reductions in visibility at times, especially over mountain passes.

A similar warning is in effect in central Idaho, where 8 to 17 inches are expected in the mountains and between 1 and 7 inches is possible in the valleys.

NWS also has issued a lesser winter weather advisory in the following counties: western Bonneville, western Bingham, Bannock, Caribou, Franklin and Oneida. These areas are expecting 5 to 9 inches of snow at higher elevations with up to 13 inches in some localized areas.

Both winter weather warnings and the advisory expire at 6 a.m. Thursday.

Additionally, although snow is forecast across east Idaho tonight, none of the major population centers — Idaho Falls, Rexburg and Pocatello — are expected to be impacted by brunt of the storm.
