WEATHER & ROADS: Freezing fog warning issued in eastern Idaho

  Published at

IDAHO FALLS — The National Weather Service issued a freezing fog warning at lower elevations in eastern Idaho on Thursday.

The advisory is in effect now until 8 a.m. Friday in the following communities: Idaho Falls, Rexburg, Pocatello, Blackfoot, Rigby, Burley, Rupert and Preston.

Officials are reporting widespread visibility will be reduced to about one mile, with some areas below 1/4 mile.

Freezing fog can deposit ice on roadways and sidewalks, especially in areas where visibility is significantly restricted. Overpasses are especially vulnerable to collection of ice from the fog.

If driving, slow down, use your headlights, and leave plenty of distance ahead of you. Also, be alert for frost on bridge decks causing slippery roads and overpasses, according to NWS officials.

Air Quality Alert in Franklin County

An air quality advisory remains in effect in Franklin County due to elevated pollutant levels in the air. A stable atmosphere with little wind is preventing pollutants from drifting outside the area.

As a result, residential wood burning restrictions have been put in place inside the county until at least 10 a.m. Friday.

Individuals with inherent sensitivity to increased particulate levels are encouraged to avoid prolonged physical exertion outside. At these levels there is an increasing likelihood of respiratory symptoms and increased aggravation of asthma and/or lung ailments, according to NWS officials.
