MOSCOW, Idaho (AP) — A northern Idaho man was sentenced to 30 years in prison after he was convicted of stabbing his former wife 14 times in April.

The Lewiston Tribune reports 25-year-old Eliseo DeLeon-Tye was sentenced Monday following his guilty plea to aggravated battery.

The Genesee man was initially charged with attempted murder but pleaded guilty to the lesser charge after reaching an agreement with Latah County prosecutors in November.

Authorities say DeLeon-Tye entered Shelby Smith’s Moscow apartment during the night and attacked her with a serrated knife. Smith survived the assault.

Public defender Catherine Mabbutt told the court that her client had hallucinations and is now on medication. She requested a sentence of five to 15 years in prison.

DeLeon-Tye will be eligible for parole in 22 years.
