Man sentenced to 40 years for sexually abusing child

IDAHO FALLS — A man convicted of seven counts of lewd conduct with a minor and one count of sexual abuse of a minor could spend the next 40 years in prison.
William Joseph Ellwood, 37, was found guilty of molesting a young girl from the time she was nine to when she turned 14 in 2016.
He was sentenced Tuesday by District Judge Bruce Pickett to 40 years with 10 years fixed on each of the seven counts of lewd conduct with a minor and 25 years with 10 years fixed for the sexual abuse of a minor charge. The sentence will be served concurrently – meaning he will be eligible for parole in 10 years.
Ellwood was given a $1,000 fine for each of the eight counts and restitution will be decided at a later date.
During Ellwood’s trial, the victim gave testimony that Ellwood first had sexual contact with her when she was nine. She said Ellwood told her not to tell her mother what had happened or “she’ll be sorry.”
