UPDATE: Salt Lake Express bus crash attributed to fatigue

PLYMOUTH, Utah — A Salt Lake Express shuttle bus carrying seven occupants struck a cable barrier and tipped on its side on southbound Interstate 15 Saturday afternoon, Utah Highway Patrol officials reported.

Shortly before 2 p.m., about 7 miles south of the Utah-Idaho border near Plymouth, a shuttle bus headed to Salt Lake City International Airport drifted off into the median and struck the cable barrier, according to UHP Sgt. Brian Nelson. The bus took out about 250 feet of the cable barrier in the crash.

The cable barrier led the bus back onto the freeway where it rolled and eventually came to a stop on the driver’s side, Nelson said.

There were seven occupants on board the bus including the bus driver. One woman was transported to a nearby hospital with injuries that were not considered to be life-threatening, Nelson said.

Officials believe fatigue played a role in the crash causing the driver to drift off the road.

Nelson said the guardrail on the freeway did what it was built to do and stopped the bus from a much more dangerous fate.

“If it hadn’t been for that guardrail, they would have went right between two bridge decks and it would have been a much worse casualty,” Nelson added.

Nelson advised other drivers to pull over and get rest if they begin to feel drowsy on the road.
