ASHTON — A special weather alert has been issued near Ashton and the Ashton Reservoir.

A heavy snow shower is moving north at about 20 mph. It is expected to last until after 2 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

The heavy snow will result in very low visibility and slick roads, creating hazardous driving conditions, especially for those traveling northbound uphill north of Ashton.

The following counties remain under a winter storm warning under 11 p.m. Sunday: Clark, Fremont, Teton, western Madison, western Bonneville, Caribou, Bannock, Bingham, Franklin, Oneida, and Power. About 2 to 4 more inches of snow is predicted in these areas with localized amounts up to 6 inches.

Some snow is predicted in the valleys, but thus far the lower elevations areas have remained fairly dry.

High winds are contributing to poor conditions. Winds gusting as high as 35 mph are causing areas of blowing and drifting snow, especially over mountain passes. Cold wind chills as low as 15 degrees below zero will cause frostbite in as little as 30 minutes to exposed skin.

Many of the highways near the Wyoming and Montana borders are listed as in difficult condition due to snow or ice.

Idaho Highway 32 between Ashton and Terreton closed Saturday and remains closed as of 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
