REXBURG — A man was arrested Tuesday after police say he attempted to strangle a woman by holding a plastic bag over her head.

Matthew Lacarte, 37, was arrested on charges of felony attempted strangulation, misdemeanor battery and misdemeanor domestic assault or battery with a child present.

Rexburg police officers were called to Lacarte’s home on Millhollow Rd. around 2:30 a.m., according to a probable cause statement obtained by EastIdahoNews.com. Three children, ages 12, 10, and 9, were inside the residence.

An adult child, who was also in the home, told officers he was downstairs when he heard his mother yelling for help. The child went to check on her and says Lacarte was “on top of (the victim) holding a plastic bag over her face and neck,” court documents state.

The man tried to get Lacarte off of his mother before the suspect allegedly punched the child in the face, cutting his nose and causing it to bleed. The three minor children also told police they could hear their mother screaming.

Lacarte, who was found guilty twice in 2016 of domestic violence battery in Bonneville County, was booked into the Madison County Jail on $40,000 bond. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on March 27.
