Idaho Falls man killed after ATV crash near Kelly Canyon

The following is a news release from the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office.

BONNEVILLE COUNTY — Matthew R. Steele, a 40-year-old man from Idaho Falls, was killed in an ATV crash over the weekend.

On Saturday, May 12 at approximately 8:35 p.m., Bonneville County Sheriff’s Deputies were called to the Table Rock Road in the Kelly Canyon area for a crash involving an ATV. Idaho Falls Ambulance, Ririe QRU, and Forest Service Law Enforcement also responded to the scene to assist.

Upon arrival, emergency personnel found that an ATV with an adult male and an adult passenger left the road way at a high rate of speed and went down an 11 foot embankment. The passenger was able to jump free of the ATV and was uninjured. The driver was unable to get free and was severely injured upon impact at the bottom of the embankment.

Bystanders provided first aid until emergency personnel arrived but the victim succumbed to his injuries on scene.

Deputies believe speed and alcohol were a factor in the crash and neither the driver or passenger were wearing helmets.

The crash is still under investigation. The Bonneville County Coroners Office also responded to the scene.

The Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office reminds everyone who recreates in the back country to always wear the proper safety gear and helmets, prepare for emergencies, and ride safely.
