Man accused of killing his brother with a pool cue enters plea agreement

IDAHO FALLS — A man accused of killing his brother by hitting him over the head with a pool cue has accepted a plea agreement.

Cory Hix, 41, will plead guilty to voluntary manslaughter for the death of his brother, Jeremy Ray Hix.

The prosecution will drop the use of a deadly weapon enhancement charge and will argue for a total prison sentence of 13 years with three years fixed and 10 years indeterminate. Hix and his attorney are free to argue for whatever sentence they see fit.

The plea agreement is non-binding on the court, meaning Hix will not be able to withdraw his guilty plea if the judge decides to deliver a sentence outside of the defense and prosecution’s recommendations.

Hix is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 14 and is expected to plead guilty on that date. He is facing up to 15 years in prison.

An altercation between Hix and his brother occurred at Pockets on Northgate Mile in the early hours of Sept. 18. Court documents show Hix rushed Jeremy to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center around 2:40 a.m. and told officers he and the victim were playing pool.

“Cory said that he was spinning his pool stick around and he accidentally hit Jeremy in the head with the pool stick causing the pool stick to break,” according to court documents.

As Cory paced outside the emergency room, documents say he repeatedly told officers he hit his brother with a pool stick.

“Cory quickly stated it was an accident and did not mean it,” police wrote in their reports.

Jeremy passed away at EIRMC on Sept. 19. Hix remains in the Bonneville County Jail.
