REXBURG — A female Brigham Young University-Idaho student was reported to have been sexually assaulted in an off-campus housing complex Sunday evening.

The alleged assault was made known to students in a campus-wide email sent from University Relations via the Title IX office, which deals with reports of sexual misconduct on campus.

In the email, university officials say “they received a report of a sexual assault against a female student that occurred at an off-campus housing unit on Sunday evening. The man responsible for this incident has not been identified, but targeted the student through an anonymous social media application.”

No other information about the incident will be released by BYU-Idaho, according to university spokesman Brett Crandall. He said the university sends out warnings per the federal Clery Act, which covers the reporting of campus crime and violence.

As of Tuesday, no police reports had been filed in relation to the assault, according to Rexburg Police spokesman Capt. Randy Lewis.

The university has not stated if there is any additional danger to the community, however, it issued the following statement in the email:

“Sexual assault is a crime. Students are encouraged to use caution when participating on social media and dating apps. BYU-Idaho is committed to maintaining a safe campus community. If you have been a victim of sexual assault or you know someone who has, we encourage you to contact the Title IX Office at (208) 496-9209 for additional support. If you are concerned for your safety on campus call 911, Public Safety at (208) 496-4000 or Rexburg Police at (208) 359-3008.”
