Multiple news outlets project Mitt Romney winner in Senate race

  Published at

SALT LAKE CITY — Former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is likely heading to Washington after defeating Democratic challenger Jenny Wilson to claim a Senate spot vacated by retiring Sen. Orrin Hatch.

CNN projected the race in favor of Romney Tuesday night. NBC News and The Associated Press also projected Romney the winner.

Romney, also a former Massachusetts governor, decided to run after Hatch announced his retirement in January and defeated Mike Kennedy in June to win the Republican nomination.

He replaces the country’s second-longest serving current senator in Washington. Hatch also is the sixth-longest serving senator in U.S. history.
