Nearly 100K pounds of ground beef recalled following inspection at Utah facility

SALT LAKE CITY — Swift Beef Co. on Saturday issued a recall of nearly 100,000 pounds of raw beef recently processed at its northern Utah facility.

In a prepared statement, officials from the U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) said 99,260 pounds of raw ground beef produced at the Swift Beef Plant, 410 N 200 West in Hyrum, may have been contaminated with E. coli.

According to the statement, the contamination was discovered by FSIS inspectors on Nov. 15 and a recall was issued the following day.

All recalled items “bear establishment number ‘EST. 628’ inside the USDA mark of inspection,” the statement says, and include the following products:

• 2,000 lb. – bulk pallets of Swift Ground Beef 81/19 (81 percent lean) Fine Grind Combo bearing product code 42982.
• 8-10 lb. – plastic wrapped chubs of “blue ribbon BEEF” Ground Beef 81/19 (81 percent lean) Coarse Grind bearing product code 42410.
• 8-10 lb. – plastic wrapped chubs of “blue ribbon BEEF” Ground Beef 93/07 (93 percent lean) Coarse Grind bearing product code 42413.
• 8-10 lb. – plastic wrapped chubs of “blue ribbon BEEF” Ground Beef 85/15 (85 percent lean) Coarse Grind bearing product code 42415.
• 8-10 lb. – plastic wrapped chubs of “blue ribbon BEEF” Ground Beef 73/27 (73 percent lean) Coarse Grind bearing product code 42510.

The FSIS statement says the affected items were shipped to retail distributors in California, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington.
