CIRCLEVILLE, Piute County — Search crews on Friday found the body of a St. George man who was caught in an avalanche while riding a snowmobile Thursday evening, sheriff’s officials said.

Beaver County Sheriff Cameron Noel confirmed they located the body of the 41-year-old man about 11:45 a.m. The man’s name wasn’t immediately released.

Officials received a report of an avalanche in the “bowl” area on Circleville Mountain near Circleville, Piute County, shortly before 5:10 p.m., Beaver County Sheriff’s Sgt. Glen Woolsey said.

Woolsey said three men from Washington County were riding snowmobiles at the time, and two of the men were caught in the avalanche. One of the men was able to dig himself out.

Woolsey said the trio had ridden snowmobiles in that area “numerous times” before, including earlier this year.

“They were familiar with the area and the terrain,” he said in a statement.

More than 50 officials from various agencies are assisting in Friday’s search.

Search and rescue teams from Beaver, Piute and Sevier counties, as well as crews from the Utah Highway Patrol, Star9, Wasatch Backcountry Rescue and the U.S. Forest Service were involved in search efforts Friday morning.
