RATHDRUM – Two people are in the hospital Monday night following a three-vehicle crash in the Idaho panhandle.

Idaho State Police say Roger Schroeder of Kalispell, Montana was pulling two trailers with his Kenworth Tractor. He hit Charlene Larson of Rathdrum, who was driving a red 2006 Dodge pickup after she failed to yield to a stop sign on ID 53 near Atlas Road.

Schroeder’s rear trailer rolled over, spilling the full load of lumber.

Matthew Diel of Sandpoint was traveling eastbound on Highway 53 in a white 2011 Subaru Legacy. Diel’s vehicle was struck by the lumber from Schroeder’s trailer.

Larson and Schroeder were both transported to Kootenai Health in Coeur d’Alene with injuries. Diel was not injured.

Their exact conditions are unknown, but the highway was blocked for approximately 1 hour while crews worked to clean up the spill. The clean up took about three hours.

The crash occurred a little after 1 p.m. Monday.
