BOISE — An 88-year-old incarcerated man, who has not been identified, has died as a result of COVID-19.

The Idaho Department of Correction confirms the inmate tested positive for the virus. He was transferred from the Idaho State Correctional Institution to Boise hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:57 p.m. Friday as a result of complications caused by the virus.

The inmate was the fifth person incarcerated under the jurisdiction of IDOC to die from COVID-19. Statewide there have been 752 deaths from COVID-19. The majority of the deaths are among people over the age of 60.

Despite the growing number of deaths in Idaho, recoveries still far exceed those that die.

COVID-19 has an extremely high recovery rate and the vast majority of people who catch the virus will recover at home with no problems. More than 16,500 people have recovered from COVID-19 in eastern Idaho, and more than 33,000 have recovered statewide.
