City of Pocatello reminds residents not to move snow from property to street

POCATELLO — The city of Pocatello is reminding residents not to push, shovel or blow snow into the street.

“When the plow comes by, it can push the snow back towards the property, creating a berm that can be difficult to clear for residents, but it is an unavoidable side effect of plowing,” Deputy Public Works Director Tom Kirkman said in a news release. “Residents also need to be aware that piles of snow in the roadway can be a hazard for drivers. If the snow pile freezes solid, it can be similar to hitting a large obstruction and it can damage the vehicle as well as injure the driver.”

Property owners shoulder the responsibility of removing snow and ice from walkways, according to city code. When removing snow and ice, though, property owners are required to deposit said snow and ice onto their property.

Violations of either part of this code can be issued citations, with multiple violations resulting in misdemeanors.

“If you see the plow coming, please wait until it is finished before you clear the berm in front of your driveway and mailbox, as the driver most likely will make more than one pass,” Kirkman added. “This way you only have to move the snow one time.”
