Four taken to hospital after fire destroys Idaho Falls home

IDAHO FALLS — Four people were taken to the hospital after a house fire destroyed a home Monday night.
The Idaho Falls Fire Department was called to a house on the 700 block of Sonja Avenue just before midnight, according to an Idaho Falls Fire Department news release. By the time firefighters arrived, fire engulfed the home, and a large amount of smoke could be seen about half a mile away.
Six people were home at the time when the fire started inside the living room. Everyone made it outside before first responders arrived, but three men and a woman were taken to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center with minor injuries and in stable condition.
The fire department sent three engines, two ambulances and a battalion chief to the fire. The Idaho Falls Police Department also responded. Intermountain Gas and Idaho Falls Power were also called and temporarily turned off utilities in the area as a safety precaution.
None of the first responders were hurt.
Officials said Tuesday the home is a complete loss with damages estimated at $250,000, including the house and the items inside.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by IFFD’s Fire Prevention and Investigations Division.
“We want the family and other community members to know that there is help available for individuals who have been displaced by a fire and need additional assistance,” said IFFD spokeswoman Kerry Hammon. “Please reach out to the local Red Cross or give us a call so we can direct you to other resources.”
