Chubbuck man facing drug charges, enhancement for meth possession

CHUBBUCK — A Chubbuck man faces nearly 15 years in prison following a drug arrest early Monday morning.

Jared William Jones, 42, was taken into custody at the Extended Stay Pocatello. He was allegedly found to be in possession of numerous smoking devices, which returned a presumptive positive when tested for methamphetamine, and syringe filled with an unidentified liquid, according to an affidavit of probable cause.

In addition to drug charges, the Bannock County Prosecutors Office is pursuing a persistent violator enhancement.

Officers from the Chubbuck Police Department were dispatched to the Extended Stay around 4:40 a.m. on Monday responding to a 911 call, according to court documents. The caller, an employee of the motel, told officers that a tenant, Jones, was seen to be in possession of drug paraphernalia. Officers were also told that Jones was witnessed injecting an unknown substance by other residents.

Jones spoke with officers at the door to his room. Asked if he had taken any drugs, he allegedly admitted that he had been smoking meth, saying that he had smoked some as recently as 30 minutes before the officers’ arrival.

Officers asked Jones to raise in arms in front of his body. When he did, officers noticed puncture wounds consistent with needle marks.

While being placed under arrest, Jones informed officers that there were about five smoking devices in the room. The devices were tested for drugs using an NIK test kit. The test returned a presumptive positive for meth.

Jones was transported Bannock County Jail, where he was booked for possession of a controlled substance.

Officers also discovered a syringe, which was filled with an unknown liquid. The pipes and syringe were sent to the Idaho State Police Forensics Lab for testing.

If found guilty, Jones would face up to seven years in prison and $15,000 in fines for the drug charges. The persistent violator enhancement would double the prison sentence.

Jones is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on April 26.
