IDAHO FALLS – Authorities are assessing damage to a railroad bridge in Idaho Falls after it caught fire Monday evening.

The fire occurred near the intersection of 25th East and 105th North around 5:30 p.m., according to Idaho Falls Fire Department spokeswoman Jessica Clements.

Clements says someone was trying to burn weeds along a ditch bank in the area. The wind picked up and the flames got away from them, quickly spreading to the bridge.

Firefighters arrived within 10 minutes and had the fire out by 6:50 p.m. No one was injured but there was some damage to the bridge. Railroad inspectors are investigating to determine the extent.

Clements reminds residents to pay close attention to the weather prior to burning. Do not burn during windy conditions or when winds are expected. Monitor controlled burns at all times, have water or other means of extinguishing flames nearby and call 911 quickly if it gets out of control.
