Kellen Moore to coach Derek Carr in New Orleans. Moore crushed him while at Boise State

BOISE (Idaho Statesman) — Former Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore became the youngest coach in the NFL earlier this week when the New Orleans Saints hired him just days after Moore won Super Bowl LIX as an offensive coordinator with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Moore, who went 50-3 as a starter at Boise State from 2008 to 2011, is just 36 years old. At such a young age, it’s no surprise there are still a few players in the league around Moore’s age — including his new quarterback, Derek Carr.

Carr, 33, is entering his third year with the Saints after spending his first nine years in the league with the Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders.

However, Moore and Carr’s connection goes much deeper than their closeness in age — they have a unique history dating back to their college days. The pair went head to head in 2011 when Moore’s Boise State team went up against the Carr-led Fresno State.

The No. 5 Broncos left as easy 57-7 winners, with Moore throwing for 254 yards and three touchdowns. Carr had a less-enjoyable game, throwing for 126 yards and an interception.

Carr may have mixed emotions about having the former Bronco as his new head coach. On the one hand, Moore arrives at a Saints team that desperately needs revitalization. Last year, the Saints’ offense ranked 21st in the NFL for yards per game (320.1) en route to a 5-12 record and last place in the NFC South.

Carr’s 2,145 yards ranked 25th in the league. Meanwhile, Moore arrives after guiding the Eagles’ offense during the team’s first Super Bowl win in seven years. His team scored an NFC Championship Game-record 55 points against the Washington Commanders before dropping 40 points on the two-time defending champion Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl.

On the other hand, Carr isn’t a big fan of the Broncos. Carr’s older brother, David Carr, also played quarterback for Fresno State from 1997 to 2001. He was part of the No. 8 Fresno State side that lost 35-30 to Boise State in October 2001 — a game that also lives in Boise State history as the Broncos’ first ranked win at the FBS level.

“I remember that game like it was yesterday,” Derek told the Idaho Statesman in 2011. “It made me feel for my brother, and it really made me want to come to Fresno State.”

David passed down that distaste of Boise State to Derek. When Derek arrived at Fresno State in 2009, David placed a Boise State flag in his little brother’s living room, according to previous Statesman reporting.

“That was my brother’s little moment to mess with me,” Carr said of the flag. “He said I can’t take it down till we beat them.”

Carr finally beat the Broncos in his final year at Fresno State, winning a 41-40 thriller over the Broncos in September 2013.
