6A/5A: Van Orden doubles up for Highland as Skyline boys earn 5A runner-up, Poky girls fourth (updated)

MERIDIAN – Highland’s Spencer Van Orden is just a junior, so it’s hard to imagine how good he’s going to be next year.

But this year?

Pretty good.

Van Orden won the 110-hurldes and 300-hurdles titles at Saturday’s 6A/5A track and field state championships and also placed third in the 10-meters in a personal best of 10.78.

He lowered his record in the 300 hurdles to 36.51.

That noise you hear are the dozens of college recruiters trying to find Pocatello on a map.

East Idaho athletes collected plenty of hardware, with the Skyline boys finishing second in the 5A team race with speedster Zyan Crocket clocking 10.95 to win the 5A 100 and finishing third in the 200.

The Pocatello girls earned a fourth-place trophy in 5A, just edging out Idaho Falls.

BOYS

Owen Gregory of Blackfoot capped his stellar freshman season with a win the 5A 800 in a personal-best time of 1:55.55.

Century’s Ethan Hansen had strong showing in the distance races, finishing second in the 5A 1,600 after winning the 3,200 on Friday.

Both races had a local feel as Giryan Jones of Bonneville finished fourth and Ammon Bitton of Century was fifth in the 1,600.

Bitton was third in Friday’s 3,200, with Skyline’s Alexander Renna placing fourth and the Grizzlies’ Davis Roberts in fifth. Bonneville’s Jones made the podium in sixth place.

Hillcrest hurdler Garrett Cook finished second in the 5A 110s in a PR of 14.18 and was third in the 300 hurdles in another PR of 38.98.

Bonneville’s Tyler Myrup took second in the 5A 300 hurdles, also finishing with a personal best in 38.20.

Gavin Schiffmann of Pocatello earned a spot on the top of the podium in the 5A shot put with a mark of 56-05.50.

Brayden Maughan of Rigby won the 6A discus, while Madison’s Joshua Benitez was fourth.

Titan Nebeker of Thunder Ridge cleared 6-6 in the 6A high jump to earn second place.

GIRLS

Idaho Falls sprinter Hallie Burton finished second in both the 100 and 200 finals with Century’s Emryail Warnock right behind in third place in the 100 and Pocatello’s Aryanna Gonzalez was third in the 200.

Gracee Anderson of Highland was second in the 6A 400 in 57.37.

Jaycee Jensen of Idaho Falls won the 3,200 on Friday and finished third in the 1,600 on Saturday.

Century’s Hailey Jackson was second in the 1,600 in a PR of 5:11.00 after finishing second to Jensen in the 3,200 in a PR time of 11:02.37.

Idaho Falls’ Abby Coleman was third in the 5A 110 hurdles and Highland’s Leigh Ellis was a double medalist, placing third in the 300 hurdles and fifth in the 100 hurdles.

The Pocatello’s 4×400 team of Adrie Johnson, Nuala Rollins, Aryanna Gonzalez and Hailee Pool won in a record time of 4:06.17.

It was a good meet for area basketball players as Cambrie Waterhouse of Blackfoot won the 5A shot put with mark of 39-2.5 and Mia Walsh of Madison finished second in the 6A high jump at 5-2.
