WAYNE, New Jersey — The Idaho Falls Spud Kings are the Dineen Cup champions, downing the South Shore Kings 2-1 Monday afternoon in the tournament final.

Owen Beyer scored off an assist from Bravery Esplin in the first period and Easton Edwards followed with a goal that was assisted by Andrew Schmidt and Sammy Grimaldi to stake the Spud Kings to an early 2-0 advantage.

That was more than enough for goalie Charlie Durkin.

Jake Kavanagh scored for South Shore at 16:31 in the third, but that was as close as the Kings would get.

That was the lone goal allowed by Durkin in the championship tournament’s three games. He stopped 30 shots on Monday and stopped 362 of 378 (96%) shots overall during the 12-game postseason.

The Spud Kings beat South Shore in the championship tournament opener 1-0 on Friday and beat the Mercer Chiefs 1-0 on Saturday.

Plans for a championship celebration at Mountain America Center are underway.
