Rigby pole vaulters sweep district competition and set their sights on the state meet

RIGBY — For this week’s Athlete of Week, we’re going flying and we’re taking more than just one athlete along.
Say hello to Gracie, Lizzy, Kaylei and Garrett.
Among the many accolades at last week’s 6A and 5A combined District 4-5-6 track and field meet, perhaps the most overlooked but impressive results came from the Rigby pole vaulters.
Coached by Jared Scott, the Trojans swept the girls 6A pole vault, with freshman Gracie West winning the district title by clearing 12-0. Lizzy Poston, a junior, finished second at 11-6, and sophomore Kaylei Kelley cleared 11-0, earning berths for all three to this week’s state championships.

The sweep was also added much-needed points in the team race, where the Trojan girls finished second overall.
West’s 12-0 is the top 6A mark in the state, but six other girls, including Poston and Kelley, have all cleared 11-0 this season, so expect the event to be competitive, with the winner likely having to get over 12-0 for the win.
But it wasn’t just the girls collecting medals, Rigby senior Garrett Merwin set a Rigby school record in the pole vault of 15-5 at the district meet and will look to get on the podium at the state meet.
