Around the Horn: Blackfoot, Challis-Mackay score conference road wins during busy baseball Saturday

EASTERN IDAHO — A busy Saturday saw local baseball teams play at venues across the state. Two local games featured massive conference road wins for the Blackfoot Broncos and Challis-Mackay Rivercats.

Here is what happened Saturday on diamonds across eastern Idaho:

Blackfoot @ Bonneville

With three runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh, the Broncos (3-7, 1-1) bested the Bees (11-3, 4-1) 10-6, handing Bonneville its first conference loss and ending what had been a 10-game winning streak.

Blackfoot got three hits and two runs scored from junior Kaeden Fisher, who stole two bases. Seniors Griffin Ross and Conner Cannon each homered in the victory.

Bonneville senior Gavin Webb also homered.

Challis-Mackay @ North Fremont

The Rivercats (3-7, 1-3) ended their own five-game losing streak, beating the Huskies (4-4, 2-3) 9-6.

Carter Ivie hit a solo homer and scored two runs in the victory.

Teton @ Filer; Teton @ Kimberly

The Timberwolves (5-4, 0-0) lost a pair of games at the Mid-Season Classic, played at Kimberly High School, falling 7-5 to the host Bulldogs and 6-5 to Filer.

Teton got a three-hit, two-run performance from Wyatt Moore in their loss to Kimberly, who pitched and allowed six runs — four unearned — in 4-1/3 innings, suffering a walk-off loss.

South Fremont @ Kimberly; South Fremont @ Filer

The Cougars (11-4, 0-0) also took part in the Mid-Season Classic at Kimberly High School, splitting their two games.

Walker Hobbs went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, to go with a solo homer from Tucker Jacobsen, in South Fremont’s 5-2 victory over Filer. Hobbs added another hit and two more RBIs in a 10-9 loss to Kimberly.

Wendell @ Firth

The Cougars (7-3, 2-0) snatched a big non-conference win, beating Wendell 7-6 behind Grant Vasquez and Brycen Andersen.

Vasquez went 4-for-4 with three stolen bases and runs scored out of the lead-off spot. Andersen drove in three runs.

Columbia @ Pocatello

The Thunder (8-6, 0-0) swept a doubleheader against Columbia.

Poky got a dominant start from senior Huston Himmerich in a 2-1 victory. Himmerich went the distance, allowing six hits and one unearned run while striking out six in his 7 innings of work.

The Thunder won the second game behind their offense, getting two RBIs apiece from sophomores Gentry MacRory and Quinn MacRory.

Bear Lake @ Wood River; Bear Lake @ Buhl

The Bears (2-11-1, 0-1) settled for a loss and a tie in two Mid-Season Classic games at Buhl High School.

Freshman Mason Bloxom drove in a run in both games, a 12-2 loss against host Buhl and a 6-6 tie against Wood River.

Soda Springs @ American Falls

The Cardinals (4-4, 0-1) got solid production from the top of their order, with each of the first five batters in the Soda Springs lineup scoring multiple runs, led by freshman two-hole hitter Isaiah Bowman with three.

The Beavers (0-13, 0-0) got three runs scored from their lead-off man, Waylon Hensley, in a 14-4 mercy-rule defeat.

Snake River @ Buhl; Snake River @ Wood River

The Panthers (1-12, 0-1) dropped a pair of Mid-Season Classic games at Buhl High School.

Snake River held a short-lived 9-8 lead over Wood River, when senior Jackson Jorgensen launched a second-inning grand slam. But Wood River overcame the big swing for an 11-9 win.

Jorgensen finished his six-RBI afternoon knocking in a pair in a 7-6 loss to Buhl.

Marsh Valley @ Nampa Christian

The Eagles (9-3, 2-0) jumped all over Nampa Christian on the road, earning a 21-10 victory.

Senior Tate Whitworth was big in the lead-off spot, going 4-for-6 with two doubles, a stolen base, five runs scored and three RBIs.
