Week 3 recap and notes: Checking in on undefeated teams and east Idaho’s dominance in border games

EASTERN IDAHO — The season is in full swing for District 6 teams as they head into Week 3.

Who’s unbeaten?

In 6A, Madison and Rigby appear on a collision course for the conference title when they meet in the regular-season finale on Oct. 23.

Both are 4-0, with the Bobcats coming off a grueling 15-7 win over No. 5 Mountain View.

Of course, a lot can happen between now and then, including Highland bouncing back from its 0-3 start to get back into contention.

In 5A, no surprises here as Skyline and Hillcrest open the season 3-0.

Blackfoot, the conference preseason No. 1 pick in the coaches’ poll, is 2-0 in conference, but suffered its first loss of the season last week at Twin Falls.

All eight teams in the 5A High Country Conference have at least one win.

In 4A, South Fremont and Sugar-Salem are each 3-1, with the Cougars’ loss coming to 3A power West Side, and the Diggers’ loss coming against 4A state champion Homedale.

Sugar-Salem coach Tyler Richins said the season-opening loss to Homedale was a wake-up call and the team has responded with three straight wins, including last week’s tough win over Star Valley (Wy).

There are no unbeatens in the 3A Nuclear Conference, but the competition should heat up once teams start playing conference games over the second half of the season.

Salmon, which was 2-7 a year ago and winless in conference, is off to a 3-1 start and bolstered by a defense that is giving up just 8.25 points per game.

The rest of the conference teams all made the playoffs last season, with Ririe advancing to the state title game.

So far in 2026, West Jefferson and North Fremont look competitive, at 3-1 and 2-2, respectively.

After a 1-8 season a year ago, Butte County is back atop the 2A High Desert Conference at 3-1.

The Pirates’ lone loss was 28-20 to Carey, which is No. 2 in the 1A media state rankings.

In the 1A Rocky Mountain Conference, Watersprings (1-1) and Mackay (1-3) are chasing District 5’s Rockland (3-0) and North Gem (3-1).

Border game dominance

Rigby’s run through Utah teams continue as the Trojans travel to Box Elder (UT) for this week’s matchup.

The Trojans have already checked off wins over Utah teams Roy, Farmington and Syracuse.

Madison has a win over Riverton (UT).

Sugar-Salem snapped a two-game losing streak to Star Valley (Wy.) on Friday and closes the regular-season with a game at Layton Christian (UT).

Another Berger Bowl

It’s a game that doesn’t impact the standings, but the family tradition continues as coach Scott Berger’s Skyline team plays against son Michael Berger’s Thunder Ridge squad on Friday.

Skyline has beaten the Titans all four meetings, but host Thunder Ridge is off to a 2-1 start.

Stat leaders

-Kyler Lewis of Ririe is fourth in the state with 474 rushing yards.

-North Fremont’s Dodge Wynn leads the state with 55 total tackles and West Jefferson’s Hobbs Hall is third with 52.
