EASTERN IDAHO – This has become one of the best interstate matchups of the regular season as one of the top programs from Idaho faces off against a Wyoming powerhouse.
Star Valley handed the Diggers their only regular-season loss last year, and also won at Sugar-Salem in 2024. Sugar-Salem won the previous four meetings.
The programs have each dominated within their state, with the Braves riding a 34-game win streak, including a 35-28 win two weeks ago at Soldotna, a three-time Alaska state champion.
State championships?
Star Valley is a four-time defending 3A state champion, while Sugar-Salem has won six state titles in the past eight years.
Welcome to 2026, where Sugar-Salem has won two straight games after a season-opening loss to nemesis Homedale.
The Diggers outscored Snake River and Shelley by a combined score of 76-0 in the two wins, but will get a good test from a Braves’ team that returns 11 starters, including four All-State selections.
The Diggers have traditionally found success with their balance by pounding the ball in the running game while also being able to find success through the air. The defense might get overlooked, but is always stout.
Six players have scored rushing touchdowns, led by Walt Fillmore with three. Frank Fillmore has passed for four TDs and averages nearly 60 yards rushing.
Defensively, Sugar-Salem’s 11.0 points allowed is among leaders in 3A.
