BOISE (Idaho Statesman) — Boise State football avoided a near-catastrophic home defeat to Texas State last week, eking out a 46-45 win despite the visiting Bobcats embarking on a 36-0 second-half run.

And while the result will go down in the win column, it wasn’t enough to convince Associated Press Top 25 voters to move Boise State up in the latest poll.

The Broncos stayed at No. 20, earning 451 points. They slot in behind the SEC’s Missouri (475 points) and ahead of the Big Ten’s Iowa (401 points). It’s likely that voters weren’t overly impressed by the Broncos’ chaotic win over an unranked opponent, and may be taking into account the injury to starting quarterback Maddux Madsen, whose status remains unknown after exiting the game in the fourth quarter with an apparent knee injury.

Unsurprisingly, Boise State remains the top-ranked team among Group of Six programs, which include teams from the Pac-12, American, Mountain West, Sun Belt, Conference USA, and Mid-American Conferences.

The 2026 qualification model for the 12-team College Football Playoff guarantees one spot to the highest-ranked G6 team in the CFP Committee’s rankings, which will begin releasing weekly starting this coming Tuesday. That means that while the AP ranking doesn’t matter for CFP qualification, the Broncos will also likely top the CFP Committee’s rankings once released.

However, for the first time this season, another G6 team has joined the Broncos in the rankings. The Mountain West’s New Mexico checked in at No. 22 with 179 points after defeating San Jose State 21-16 this weekend.

Boise State also finally moved up in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll for the first time in three weeks, which is voted on by FBS coaches around the country. The Broncos moved up one spot to No. 21, receiving 455 points; they sit behind No. 20 Iowa (448 points) and ahead of No. 22 Arizona (174 points).
